What if I’m not sure which training option is right for my dog?

This is where the initial 90-min consultation comes in: I’ll give you a frank appraisal of your needs based on a close examination of health, behavior, and history. Training is a collaborative process and I’ll outline a preliminary game plan so that you’ll know what to expect every step of the way.

What training methods do you use?

I follow LIMA standards for behavior modification (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) which means that I prioritize the dog’s comfort in every session and find strategies to give them the best (and most effective) training experience, while considering the owner’s abilities and needs. I focus on shaping the behavior of the dog in front of me. I figure out what motivates your dog, what may be driving them to act in a less-than-ideal way, and how we can use those motivations to build/grow the behaviors that you want him to have. Techniques may include: positive-reinforcement, behavior shaping, leash-training, withholding-reinforcement, verbal corrections (“no” etc), and controlling their environment. There’s a lot more, although I don’t EVER use harsh physical corrections, and discourage the use of prong-collars, e-collars, and bark-collars for most situations (for a variety of reasons!).

For aggressive cases, a muzzle may be required.

Is your dog extremely sensitive and prone to shutting down? Is your dog rowdy and physical, often nipping for attention? Does your dog have social deficits, or a traumatic history? Has your dog been living with fear for 5+ years? All these cases require different approaches.
